Yvonne Brown lives and works in Gulfport, MS. She received her BFA from William Carey University on the Coast. She has taught Ceramics at WCU and teaches private classes at her studio. She is happily married and has two young daughters who love to play in the mud.
Brown’s current work focuses on forms used to enhance and display natural objects in the home and garden. Texture dominates her work at present. She finds texture adds visual emphasis and tactile interest. Stamping, carving, and stretching the clay have drawn her into detailed consideration of the surface of her pots. Balancing texture with elegant proportions, function and glaze choice is a challenge she finds exciting and fulfilling.
Although Brown does not see a direct correlation between her surroundings and her forms, she feels the Mississippi Gulf Coast has been a pronounced influence on her choice of colors. The constant green of the live oaks, camellias, and pines, as well as the sand beaches and blue sky reflecting from the Gulf waters enlivens her palette.
